Guatemala Improved Cookstoves

Fuel efficient stoves have been provided to communities through a subsidised sales model, to allow more rural communities access to clean cooking. The project is focused in rural communities of Guatemala and replaces open wood fires for cooking.

The improved cook stoves are made locally in Guatemala and greatly reduces wood consumption. The carbon finance is used to subside the sale of the stoves as well as providing the communities with a three year warranty on their stove.

Project Impacts and Benefits

As well as reducing carbon emissions through the improved cook stoves, the project delivers numerous additional impacts to the local communities, including:

• 83% reduction in hours spent collecting firewood amounting to 2.33 hours saved collecting firewood per trip. This has created less of a burden on women, men and children involved in this socially isolating activity of collecting fuel wood resources.
• 67% reduction in household air pollution from technology implemented has resulted in significant improvements in household health. Participants report this technology has reduced the incidences of respiratory illnesses, irritated eyes and children exposed to burns from open fires.
• 4,640 improved cooking stove units have been dispersed. This reduces the consumption of firewood in comparison to the baseline level, directly resulting in reduced levels of deforestation.
• 20,172 tonnes of CO2 emission reductions per year have resulted from the project implementation.
• 4.29 tonnes of firewood have been saved per household per year compared to the baseline scenario.
