Africa Bioenergy Programs Ltd (ABPL) is a social impact company registered in Kenya in 2021, formerly operating under Hivos Foundation as the Kenya Biogas Programme (KBP) since 2015 (ke.linkedin.com). ABPL is promoting the uptake of domestic biodigesters, which significantly reduce livestock households’ dependence on polluting firewood and expensive fossil fuels. Biogas cooking is efficient and smoke-free, resulting in improved health for families, especially women and children. Furthermore, the slurry from biogas is a very good organic fertilizer and results in higher crop yields. Such an increase in the production of vegetables has greatly enhanced family incomes.

Kenya was one of the first countries in Africa to use biogas in the 1950s. This type of technology has been widely adopted through the Kenya Biogas Program, which was initiated in 2015 out of a national biodigester program that started in 2009 by the Hivos Foundation. A cornerstone of ABPL’s approach is the community marketing model, Aggregating Bio-energy Consumers for Development and Entrepreneurship (ABCDE), through which we have mobilized and empowered over 25,000 consumers organized into sub-county Bio-energy User Hubs (BUHs) and coordinated nationally through the National Bioenergy Users Hub Association (NABUH) (africabioenergyprograms.org).

ABPL plays a pivotal role in carbon project management, serving as the Coordinating and Management Entity (CME) for the Gold Standard Africa Biogas Carbon Project (ABC) Programme of Activities (PoA) (africabioenergyprograms.org). Through initiatives like the Kenya Biogas Programme, ABPL has enabled the construction of over 23,000 biodigesters, delivering a tangible impact:

    • 714,020 tonnes CO₂e reduced
    • 733,704 tonnes of wood saved
    • 142,188 direct beneficiaries
    • 31 private enterprises supported
    • 107 full-time jobs created plus part-time labor (marketplace.goldstandard.org).

ABPL strategically manages carbon revenues towards the sustainable operation of the biodigesters, covering maintenance, training, marketing, and extension services. ABPL remains to be a trusted leader in delivering bioenergy solutions and carbon project management across East Africa, blending community-driven expansion, certified carbon finance, and sustainable development to scale impact in clean energy, rural livelihoods, and environmental resilience.
