Established in 2019, The African Stove Company Ltd. (TASC) is one of the world’s leading carbon project developers specialising in identifying, financing, and developing commercially viable carbon projects that meet the global demand for carbon credits and deliver meaningful, positive impact for the communities where we work. We are a highly skilled team of academics and carbon market professionals, with decades of experience in the carbon market, who are backed by a network of willing funders which enables us to implement projects at scale that adhere to the highest standards of quality, transparency and integrity.

TASC was initially established to address the problem of open fire cooking, one of the most persistent inequalities affecting over a billion people in Africa. As the main source of household air pollution, it causes over 4 million premature deaths from respiratory diseases each year. But it’s a problem which shouldn’t exist. Through improved cookstoves, we already have the technology to solve it. Through carbon finance, we also have the mechanism to distribute this technology, at scale, to the communities most in need.

Today, TASC operates worldwide with projects currently being implemented in five countries, including South Africa (where we are the country’s largest carbon project developer), Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Australia and a substantial pipeline of projects under development elsewhere.

Our expertise now extends far beyond efficient cookstoves. An intimate knowledge of the carbon market means that we can act quickly to develop projects at scale that meet the demand for high-volume, high-quality carbon credits using approved methodologies best suited to the environment and its communities. In South Africa, for example, we are developing a grassland restoration project with local herding communities, the first of its kind to be registered using Verra’s new VM0042 methodology, covering 604 780 ha of communal land and 352 218 ha of private farmland under management. In Uganda, we have implemented a project to improve safe water systems through the distribution of 30 000 ceramic water filters. In Australia, we are delivering landscape restoration and regeneration projects under the Emissions Reduction Fund and building a pipeline of agricultural soil carbon projects.

To date, we have distributed over 1.2 million devices (cookstoves and water filters) to local communities and issued over 8 million carbon credits, each equivalent to a tonne of CO2 mitigated. Our pipeline is forecast to issue over 20 million credits by 2030.

With an unwavering commitment to innovation, sustainability, and human empowerment, TASC is committed to driving forward the carbon market, catalysing a future where clean energy, environmental stewardship, and equitable development converge to create a better world for all.
