Simoshi is a social enterprise dedicated to improving the livelihoods of children and their families in Uganda. Simoshi’s clean and energy efficient project linked to carbon finance is capable of bringing a cleaner, healthier and environmentally friendly technology to low-income individuals, especially women and children. Simoshi works with schools and institutions hand in hand to ensure a successful behavioural change is achieved in all kitchen environments and they move away from traditional cooking practices.
The on-going financial benefits from the annual commercialization of the carbon credits are reinvested in the participating schools. Programmes include (i) free annual stove maintenance and (ii) kitchen hygiene and infrastructure support.
Simoshi outsources institutional improved cook stoves (IICS) and induction clean cook stoves (ICCS) from Uganda and China respectively, and either donates them or sells them at a reduced price. The behavioural transformation Simoshi brings to schools through an effective management of change and subsequent support to the continuous use of the IICS and ICCS enables both the participating schools and Simoshi to recycle a percentage of the stream of carbon credit returns, to further expand the number of schools that move up in the energy ladder. This Project Activity is 100% additional, meaning it would have never happened in the absence of carbon financing.
To date Simoshi has installed 454 institutional improved cook stoves (IICS) of different capacities in 115 schools in Kampala, Wakiso, Lweero, Mityana and Jinja. Through its registered stand-alone project “Institutional Improved Cook Stoves for Schools and Institutions in Uganda” under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and The Gold Standard (GS), it has successfully issued its first 8,457 Gold Standard Certified Emission Reductions (GS CERs) in November 2019, followed by 3,950 GS CERs in 2020, 1,647 VERs in 2022, 10,218 VERs in 2023, 12,540 VERs in 2024 and 13,235 VERs in 2025.Countries we deliver projects in: Uganda
